DR. BEN SHELL 1925 - 2002 On Saturday, December 7, 2002 at home surrounded by his family. Ben is survived by his wife Cal; children, Barry (Dorinda), Miriam (Harry) and Ruth; also by his brother Bill (Ruth) sister Pauline Zinman; and grandchildren, Sam and Davina. Ben was born July 27, 1925 in Winnipeg. He graduated from St. Johns Tech, then went on to obtain a B.Sc. and MD at the University of Manitoba. Ben worked for more than 30 years as an anaesthetist at the Misericordia Hospital. With local dentists, he pioneered the administration of outpatient anaesthesia for oral surgery. He served on the executive and as president of the Manitoba Anaesthesia Society. In the 1970s, he was appointed by the Manitoba government to serve on the Board of Governors, University of Manitoba and on the Medical Review Committee of the Manitoba Health Services Commission. Starting in 1980, in semi-retirement, Cal and Ben enjoyed many lovely winters in their second home in Santa Barbara, CA. Ben lived a full rewarding life with no regrets at the end. He enjoyed golf, bridge, wood-working, CBC Radio 2 and the New Yorker. A strong believer in social justice, Ben was a member of the CCF and the NDP. He loved his work and touched the lives of many people. Ben was the "cool" uncle, maintaining close relationships with his entire extended family. The family would like to acknowledge the extraordinary team of health care professionals who looked after Ben throughout his illness and honoured his last wishes - a testament to Canadas marvellous public health system. A memorial service was held at Glendale Golf and Country Club on Sunday, December 8. A copy of Jack Londons eulogy can be found at Ben established an endowment fund at the Health Sciences Centre Foundation in support of anaesthesia research.
