MARIE SMITH (nee DIDUCH) It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing on December 12, 2002 of our beloved mother, baba, sister, aunty and great-grandmother. Marie was born January 1, 1918 in Winnipeg, marking the start of every year with a family celebration. Marie is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Laurel Kazan of Lethbridge, AB and Frances Yurkiw of Winnipeg, MB; grandchildren, Dr. Cary (Marcie) Yurkiw and daughter Jaeda, Tracy Yurkiw, Marianne (Dr. Richard) Gray of Lethbridge, AB, Kevin (Melita) Kazan of Calgary, AB; her sisters, Elsie (Ern) Gasbarro of Grand Island, N.Y., Jean Flemington of Brantford, ON; brother Dr. Alex (Joyce) Donald of Santa Barbara, CA; nephews and nieces, Ronald, Dennis, David, Gary, Gale, Marcie and Shawn. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Peter Smith (Sniatynski), parents Lena and Carl Diduch; sons-in-law, Peter Kazan and Neville Yurkiw. Marie was a devoted wife and mother, who worked nights to support her family during the "lean" years. She enjoyed spending time chatting and laughing with friends and neighbours; baking kolochi, knitting, crocheting and taking pride in her vegetable garden. The fragrance of lilacs were present every spring and everyone who visited left with a bouquet. Mom enjoyed her home, attending dances with her husband, cooking for family gatherings. When her eyes began to fail her she enjoyed family gatherings and listening to Ukrainian music. Baba was very loved by her grandchildren who were always greeted with a warm smile and patient ear to listen. She showered our accomplishments with praise and dried our tears in sadness. Baba never managed to win the "big lotto" but she won our hearts in admiration forever. The family would like to thank the staff of Seven Oaks Hospital, 4th Floor, Unit 10 and homecare workers for their care and compassion while at home. Also thank you to Dr. Haligowski and Dr. Panaskevich and family friend Cecilia for her many visits with Mom. Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 19 at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St. with Very Rev. J. Melnyk officiating. Interment will follow in Glen Eden Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends and family so desire, donations in Maries memory may be made to a charity of ones choice. Mom, you have left behind memories of great kindness and constant love for all of us, dearly loved by your family, sisters and brother. VICHNAYA PAMYAT KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 956-2193
