MARY OLGA MAAS (nee DERHAK) Peacefully on Wednesday, December 18, 2002 at the Stonewall Hospital, surrounded by family, Mary was reunited with John. She was 20 minutes shy of her 82nd birthday. Her memory will be cherished by her son Stephan; daughter-in-law Suzanne; granddaughter Jeannette Brock (fiance Joel Philion) all of Winnipeg; brothers, Arthur (Emily) of Gimli, Eugene of Dauphin; sister-in-law Ruth Derhak of Dauphin; Auntie Stella (Clarence) Davis of Sinclair; as well as many devoted nieces and nephews and other family and friends. She will be sadly missed by her garden stomping pal Cody who will forever long for those heaping plates of leftovers. Mary was predeceased by her husband John Maas; her parents Anne and Steve Derhak; brother Walter Derhak (Ruth) and sister-in-law Kay Derhak (Eugene) both of Dauphin; brothers-in-law, George Maas, Tony Maas, and Louie Maas, all of Weyburn, SK. Mary was born on the farm in Sifton, MB on December 19, 1920. She enjoyed celebrating two birthdays: her actual date of birth and her government sanctioned birthday the following February when she was finally registered. Mary was raised on the farm and like her siblings, she had chores to do. However, she always managed to have more pressing business at hand when it came time to do the dishes. She enjoyed baking, knitting, crocheting, reading, playing cards and doing crossword puzzles. Mary and John lived in Dauphin, MB and Kamsack, SK before settling in Stonewall, MB in the early sixties. Mary worked at various office jobs before taking a position as a nurses aide at Dr. Evelyn Memorial Hospital and later Rosewood Lodge, both in Stonewall. Mary was a very impatient person which was recognized as a valued quality when it came time to get the job done on time. In her retirement years, Mary enjoyed puttering in her flower beds. She always looked forward to spring when her flower garden came to life again. She was especially proud of her clematis. The family would like to take this time to thank Dr. G. Pinniger and the wonderful staff at the Stonewall Hospital for their care and compassion in tending to Mary during her stay, as well as to the staff and nurses from the Interlake Home Care Division who provided assistance to Mary while in her home and later in her suite at the Lions Manor. A special thanks goes out to Marys former colleagues still working at the Stonewall Hospital who were able to provide us with comic relief in our trying times as they shared memories of working with Mom. Not to be forgotten are the wonderful doctors and specialists whove cared for Mary during the last few years, namely, Dr. J. Mohamdee, Dr. A. Morham, Dr. N. Saad, Dr. P.A. Galbraith. In keeping with Marys wishes there will be no funeral service. Family and friends may pay their last respects at a viewing on Saturday, December 21 at the MacKenzie Funeral Chapel, 433 Main St., Stonewall, MB from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Cremation to follow. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Marys life at a come and go to be held on Sunday, December 22 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Steve and Suzannes house in Winnipeg. If friends so desire memorial donations in Marys memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, The Manitoba Lung Association or The Canadian Diabetes Association. MacKenzie Funeral Home, Stonewall in care of arrangements.
