DR. BERNARD JOSEPH EGAN Peacefully on December 24, 2002 Bernard Joseph Egan, beloved husband of Ita (McLoughlin) Egan and father of Margaret, Enda, Breen, Cliodna, Eamon and Deirdre. Born in Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland, the son of Bernard Egan and Norah (Howley) Egan, Bernie grew up in the family home, Blackfort House. He was educated at St. Josephs College, Garbally, and received his medical degree from University College, Galway in 1946. He was an accomplished schools and university athlete in many sports, notably tennis and track and field, and proudly represented Ireland internationally in rugby. After beginning his medical career in Ireland, Bernie moved to Bell Island, NF in 1948 and in 1958 moved the family to Winnipeg, where he practised until his retirement in 1990. A skilled and respected practitioner, he maintained a large and varied practice, comprised, in many cases, of successive generations of the same families. He established an early reputation in recognizing the link between nutrition and health, which continued to be an area of research and interest following his retirement. Having enjoyed a sterling athletic career in Ireland, Bernie acquired a love for the sports of his adopted country - developing an enjoyment of hockey from his earliest days in Newfoundland, which continued and deepened through the years. An active sportsman, he was a longtime member of Niakwa Country Club and the Winnipeg Winter Club, and passed his love of golf, though only a modicum of his skill, on to his children. In his retirement years, he diverted much of his intensity to cheering on the stock market as his "quotes" replaced his clubs. His friends will recall him as a raconteur and a wonderful singer. His stories and songs will be particularly missed by a wide circle of summer friends at Fair Hills, MN where he summered with the family for over 40 years, and on the shores of Lake Winnipeg. They join his many friends in Canada, Ireland and the United States who will miss, though not soon forget him. A good life well lived. Funeral mass will be celebrated by his dear friend Fr. Joseph Driscoll S.J. at St. John Brebeuf Church, 1707 John Brebeuf Pl. on Saturday, December 28 at 10:00 a.m. His family would like to offer special thanks to the caring staff at St. Boniface Hospital for their help, consideration and respect. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dr. Egans memory to the Dialysis Unit of St. Boniface Hospital. LECLAIRE BROTHERS in care of arrangements. 775-2220
