DOUGLAS H. WAITHMAN August 21, 1920 - December 24, 2002 It is with great sadness and the very deepest sorrow that the family of Doug Waithman announces his passing, on Tuesday, December 24, 2002, at the Grace Hospital. Doug was predeceased by his father Ernest; his mother Caroline, who died when Doug was six months old; Ellen, the only mother he ever really knew; and by his two brothers, Eric and Ron. He is survived by Eileen, his loving and devoted bride of 55 years; son Ken and wife Marilynne and their children, Joel (Linda) and Carrie (Gordon) daughter Deborah Schadek and husband Alan and their children, James (Heidi) and Nicole (Greg) and great-grandchildren, Jessica, Clinton and Kelsy; sister-in-law Belle Waithman; and nephews, David and Dale and their families. Doug was born and raised on the family farm in Dafoe, SK. He served overseas in The Second World War with the Royal Canadian Air Force and in the fall of 1946 he arrived in Winnipeg, where he met the love of his life Eileen and married her in June 1947. Together they opened Waithmans Hardware Store in Kirkfield Park in December of 1947 and successfully operated the business until 1969. He was a charter member of the Assiniboia Optimist Club, a long standing member of the Army, Navy and Air force Veterans Unit 283, and a member of the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to spend time with family and close friends, fishing at the cabin on the Lake of the Woods or hunting pheasants with the boys in South Dakota. He loved his yard and his garden, but above all else he loved to spend time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was a loving devoted Grandpa. His great sense of humour and caring nature will be sadly missed by all. A memorial service to celebrate Dougs life will be held on December 30 at 2:00 p.m. at Kirkfield Park United Church, 472 Kirkfield St. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations may be made to Grace Hospital Hospice building fund or charity of your choice. Deepest appreciation to the ICU, the nursing staff and doctors of Grace Hospital for their support and care. "You never asked for favours Yet you did them every day. You never asked for any help Yet you gave so much away. You never asked for gratitude And yet, our whole life through Well be forever grateful For your precious love and you." Arrangements entrusted to: CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME CEMETERY AND CREMATORIUM 885-9715
