STEVE OKO With great sadness, the family of Steve Oko announces his peaceful passing on December 28, 2002 at the Arborg Personal Care Home. He had just celebrated his 78th birthday on December 22. Steve is survived by his beloved sister Anne Chudd and her family. He was predeceased by his wife Anne in Toronto. Steve grew up and went to school in Gimli. He attended Success Business College, studying accounting and moved to Toronto to further his career. He was a man of many interests and talents. He loved music and dance and was a member of a Ukrainian Dance and Choir Company in Toronto. With this group he travelled widely, particularly enjoying a number of trips to Europe. He returned to Manitoba when his health began to fail and was devotedly and lovingly cared for by his sister Anne. Family was very important to Steve. He was a wonderful brother, uncle and friend. Steve was a gentle, caring and truly kind man. Children always brought a smile to his face. At Steves request, cremation has taken place and no service will be held. A private family interment will be held in the spring. In recognition of Steves love of children, if friends so desire, donations may be made to a childrens charity of choice. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk, in care of arrangements.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Sadly, I haven't thought about Steve for quite some time. So, wondering if he was still around &, of course, what he might be doing, I "Googled" him--only to discover his death had occurred in 2002! Here we are 23 yrs. later & I don't know what to say except that he was a really lovely man & even 23 yrs. having gone by I still think of him fondly. He & I both had music & the fine arts in common. I was a soloist with the Schevchenko Ensemble a few times (I'm a retired classical guitarist) & have throughout my life been a professional painter. Steve helped me to occasionally find frames for my work & sometimes bought pieces. For a brief time he (I think) was the partner/close confidant of my late mother-in-law, Rita Bergman in Toronto. So sorry to hear of his death. - Posted by: Johan F. Reiber/Mortenson (Friend & fellow musician) on: Mar 08, 2025
