Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWINNIFRED JEAN MCKENZIE After a long and courageous battle with cancer, Jean passed away on Friday, January 3, 2003 at the Riverview Health Centre with her family by her side. Jean is survived by her sisters, Violet McKenzie and Betty Ellis; niece Donna Krebs (Ken) nephew Jack Ellis (Patricia) great-nephews, Bryon Krebs (Noelle), Morgan and Skye; great-nieces, Sarah and Darcy Ellis. She was predeceased by her parents, sister May, brother-in-law Borden Ellis, great-nephew Neil Krebs. She was born on January 6, 1923 in Hartney, MB, third daughter of Dr. C.H. McKenzie and wife Jennie. She obtained most of her early education in Hartney and in Souris, MB, where the family moved in 1940. Jean graduated from the Winnipeg Normal School in 1943 as a teacher and taught in several schools in rural Manitoba before moving to St. Vital in 1951. After three years in St. Vital she moved to Winnipeg School Division No. 1. Jean later obtained her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education from the University of Manitoba. She retired from teaching in 1982, being a teacher and teacher librarian for 39 years. Jean enjoyed all sports, participating in many including golf, curling, 5 pin bowling and lawn bowling. In her earlier years she played and coached softball in rural schools. Jean had many happy memories curling with the Ladies Crocus Curling Club, Strathcona Club and Wildwood Club and also golfing at the Breezy Bend Golf Club and Wildwood Golf Club. She also enjoyed the Teachers 5 pin Bowling Club, the St. James Lawn Bowling Club and playing bridge with her friends. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 11 at 2:00 p.m. in the Deer Lodge United Church, 2093 Portage Ave. at Belvidere Street, Winnipeg with Rev. Peter Douglas officiating. Our family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. M. Stephensen and staff at Assiniboine Clinic, the Cancer Care at the St. Boniface Hospital, the Palliative Home Care services and especially Riverview Health Care Centre, Dr. J. Mulder and entire staff on 3 East Palliative Care Ward for their care, understanding, compassion and love. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in Jeans memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society Manitoba Division, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7 or the Riverview Health Care Centre, 1 Morley Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3L 2P4.
