INGIBJORG NICOLINA CALVERLEY September 27, 1908 - January 5, 2003 Peacefully on January 5, 2003, at the Selkirk General Hospital, Ingibjorg Calverley, aged 94 years, of Selkirk, MB, beloved wife of the late Fernie Calverley. Ingibjorg was the daughter of the late Baldwin and Arndis Johnson who came from Iceland in the early 1900s, settling near Leslie, SK. She came to Winnipeg as a young woman where she took a business course and later worked for the Stovel Publishing Co. Here she met her future husband, Fernie. In the late 30s they headed north, living in various mining communities, Beresford Lake and Bissett, to name a few. For someone growing up on the prairies, she adapted well to life in fly-in northern mining communities, where the link to the outside world was the Norseman landing on northern lakes with pontoons in the summer or skis on the frozen snow covered surfaces in the winter. My mother once told me when she first arrived in Beresford Lake, she thought the northern landscape was like a "fairyland." In spite of the many hardships she would come to face in the North, it was never without courage and the ability to see beauty around her. In their later years, they moved to Selkirk where they were closer to the amenities of a larger centre. Both of my parents ended their years at the Betel Home in Selkirk where the staff provided kindness and caring. To their children, this was much appreciated because we all live a great distance away. Ingibjorg is loving remembered by her daughter Fern of Toronto, ON; son John (Dianne) of Edmonton, AB; daughter Janice (Dave) of Stratford-Upon-Avon, England. She is also remembered by her grandchildren, Chris, Jeff, Jason, Mark, John, Laurie, Matthew, Susie, Michael and Sarah; great-grandchildren are Melissa, Sean and Emma and Milly. Following a private family viewing cremation will take place and a service of remembrance will be held on Thursday, January 9 at 1:00 p.m. in the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Selkirk, with Pastor Stan Richards officiating. Interment of ashes will follow in the Selkirk Lutheran Cemetery. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
