WILLIAM JOSEPH ZEWENIUK October 11, 1921 - January 4, 2003 After a battle with cancer, Bill passed away in the Meno-Ya-Win Hospital, Sioux Lookout, ON on January 4, 2003. Bill was predeceased by Olga, his wife of 46 years, his parents, Onofrey and Mary, and brother Harry. He is survived by his son Bill, and granddaughter Kathleen, of Winnipeg and sister Jennie of Seeleys Bay, ON. Bill was born in and lived his entire life in Sioux where he worked for C.N.R. as a conductor on freight until he took early retirement in 1979. As a young man, he was very active in sports especially baseball, hockey and later as a referee. Baseball was his first love, and as a southpaw, he had quite a reputation. When participation sagged, he worked hard at keeping baseball alive in Sioux through the 1950s. He remained an avid fan of both hockey and baseball until his final days. His time at home with Olga, spending time in his garden, or in the hotstove leagues around town were of most importance and great fun to him. A special thanks to Bills caregivers, Dr. Ben Yip and the medical staff on 7A South at the St. Boniface General Hospital in Winnipeg, Dr. John Morgan and the medical staff at the Meno-Ya-Win Hospital in Sioux Lookout, and especially his niece Alfhea Rasmussen of Marathon, ON and to his friend Bill Carroll in Sioux for their continuous care and support over the years and particularly during his health struggles over the past year. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sioux Lookout on Wednesday, January 8 at 1:00 p.m. with Fr. Mike Mahoney officiating. Interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation (877-407-2223) or through the Sioux Lookout Funeral Home, PO Box 1449, Sioux Lookout, ON P8T 1B9.
