FLORENCE PEMKOWSKI (KAPUSTA) Mrs. Florence Pemkowski passed away peacefully at the age of 94 at Deer Lodge Centre on Sunday, January 12, 2003 with her daughter Marge and her granddaughter at her side. Mum was born in Ukraine on August 28, 1908 and came to Canada at the age of 21. Immigrating alone to a new country with no knowledge of the language or what was ahead of her, shows how fiercely independent a lady she was. Determined to make a new life for herself in a new world, she overcame all the challenges that she encountered. Mum married our dad, Mike Kapusta in 1934. They loved to go fishing in their years together. Mike predeceased her in 1967. She was one of the founding members and was a lifetime member of the Selkirk Avenue Seniors Centre and enjoyed playing pool and carpet bowling with her friends there. She was very proud of the many trophies and awards she won for bowling. Mum also enjoyed her bingo, going to the casinos, both here and in the States, and in her later years her daily walks to Branch 141 Legion to play VLTs. Mum is survived by her daughters, Marge Kasprick of Winnipeg and Jean Jonasson (Leon) of Thunder Bay; her three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, Lori Britton (Kristi, Jenni, Kelsi and Hayli), Michael Jonasson (Corey, Lindsay and Jessica) and Trevor (Anita) Jonasson (Jordan). She was predeceased by Mike Pemkowski in 1982. Funeral service will take place at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St. on Friday, January 17 at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. I. Dziadyk, OSBM officiating. Interment will follow in Brookside Cemetery. Special thanks to all the staff at both 5B of St. Boniface Hospital and 2E of Deer Lodge Centre for their care, kindness and compassion.
