ANASTASIA (NETTIE) SHEREMETA (nee SLUSAR) Nettie Sheremeta peacefully passed away on January 13, 2003 at Concordia Hospital at the age of 85. Her family is comforted knowing she has been reunited with her beloved son Michael, who predeceased her in 1960. She was also predeceased by her husband Steve, her parents, Michael and Sophie Slusar and special friend Carl. Nettie is survived by her sisters, Doris Fostey, Anne Styba and Olga Zarazun (Tony), numerous nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and special friends and neighbours Pete and Carol Selby. Nettie was born in Roblin in 1917, the oldest of four sisters who helped run the family farm. She was proud of her Ukrainian heritage, which she displayed in her Winnipeg home with colourful Easter eggs, embroidery and costumes for dolls her grandnieces liked to carry around her living room. Nettie was a longtime member of the Ukrainian National Federation and Ukrainian Womens Association of Canada, Lesia Ukrainka branch. A gifted seamstress, she made costumes for the original Rusalka Dance Ensemble, travelling with them to Mexico and other places. She also crafted the vestments for priests and headdress for metropolitans, bishops and clergy. An independent woman who loved her home, Nettie spent hours in her vegetable and flower gardens, sharing her harvest and baking with family and neighbours. Prayers will be Friday, January 17, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St. Funeral service is Saturday, January 18 at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, 1175 Main St. Interment to follow at All Saints Cemetery, 4535 Main St. Flowers gratefully declined.
