MICHAEL SLOTA "A tower of strength, a man who had great courage, resilience and understanding of life." On Thursday, January 16, 2003, Michael passed away at the Riverview Health Centre. He is survived by his wife Lorraine; son Jonathan; brother James Peter (Jeanne) step-mother Bernice Slota; mother-in-law Anne Poplawski; sisters-in-law, Rita (Joe) Garcia, Irene (Jim) Adams; brother-in-law Albert Smith; special niece Melany (Jeremy) special nephew Joey Garcia, as well as nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Mike was blessed with a beautiful sister, Madeline, who predeceased him in 1987. He missed her dearly. Michael was born on September 11, 1939 in Oakbank, MB. He was the son of the late John Slota and Stella Kurchaba. He vividly remembered kerosene lamps, water pails, pumping water and chopping wood. Mike was educated in the second Oakbank School. He excelled in math, science, physics and geography. In his teen years he was nicknamed "Spike", as he was very tall and slim. In 1959 Mike was employed with C.P. Rail and, true as a spike, he stuck firm as could be to the company. At first he worked as a locomotive wiper, then in the linen and dining car department, the freight shed, became a car coordinator and later a crew dispatcher. He truly loved the railroad, talking about it and meeting with the guys to chat. Michael received a C.P. Rail buy-out in December 1996 after 37 years with the company. In February, 1997, he was diagnosed with cancer. In February 1983 Michael was blessed with his son Jonathan whom he cherished, loved and cared for. He loved his sons educational and musical achievements. He has lit his sons torch to walk proudly, be strong and move on. In keeping with Michaels wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. Interment will take place in the Birds Hill Park family cemetery at a later date. Thank you to all the doctors, staff at Riverview Health Centre, Concordia Hospital and the CancerCare, Health Sciences Centre. Your kindness, caring, understanding and warmth were greatly appreciated. Also, thank you to our family and friends for your visits, prayers and masses. Flowers gratefully declined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Michaels memory to the Canadian Cancer Society, Manitoba Division, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7.
