GRACE ELIZABETH MENZIES -

Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGRACE ELIZABETH MENZIES 1907 - 2003 Passed away peacefully at Grace Hospital on January 19, 2003 at the age of 95 years. She is survived by her sister Florentine Hunter; her sisters-in-law, Selma Menzies and Agnes Menzies; nieces, Marion Parker, Claire Menzies, Margaret Callbeck; nephews, Robert Ian Hunter, Sandy Menzies, Walter and Brian Menzies. Grace was born in Oakburn on January 25, 1907 and attended school in Oakburn until she completed Grade 11. After completing Grade 12 in Daniel McIntyre Collegiate, she attended the Provincial Normal School. She taught in Birtle school for two years, in Eden High School for two years and 43 years in the Winnipeg School District. During this time she taught in Argyle School for one year, then taught music and science at Hugh John MacDonald Jr. High School for 16 years. After attending the University of Manitoba, University of Wisconsin and the University of Denver, she received her M.A. and M.Ed. Degree and had almost completed her Ph.D.. when her research was burned in a garage fire. During this time she worked in the elementary schools as a supervisor, then as principal of Fort Rouge School for four years and ten years as principal of Riverview School. During this time, she taught summer school classes at Dalhousie and Winnipeg, and for eight years evaluated books for the Toronto School system. She was a member of the Manitoba Teachers Society, University Womens Club, Tuxedo Lawn Bowling Association and her beloved Westworth United Church, where she was on the board, taught Sunday School for many years and was a longtime member of the 20-90 Club. She retired from Riverview School in 1973 and spent the remaining years of her life living in Winnipeg. A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 24 at 2:00 p.m. in Westworth United Church, 1750 Grosvenor, with Rev. Clark Saunders officiating.
