KATHLEEN (KAY) MAUDE DOUGLAS (nee FORSYTHE) Kathleen (Kay) Maude Douglas (nee Forsythe) died Friday, January 24, 2003 at the Portage District General Hospital, Portage la Prairie, MB. Kay was born at High Bluff, MB on July 14, 1912, the youngest daughter of Andrew (Andy) and Maude Forsythe. Predeceased by her parents, sisters, Marion, Edna and Jean; and husbands, Dr. Daniel Blake and Neil (Doug) Douglas, she is survived by two brothers, Harry and Jack (Lois) Forsythe both of Portage la Prairie; step son Hewitt Douglas of Calgary; and several nieces and nephews. Kay finished her schooling at High Bluff and completed her nurses training at the Childrens Hospital in Winnipeg. She nursed in the United States for a period after which she returned to Winnipeg. In 1939 she married Dr. Daniel Blake and together they spent some time in the United States where he completed his medical studies. Upon returning to Canada they settled in Toronto where Dr. Blake was in practice until his death in 1963. In the early 1970s, Kay moved to Winnipeg and nursed for a time at the Victoria Hospital. On April 24, 1976 she married Doug Douglas, a longtime friend and they lived at Evergreen Place until his death in 1984. In November 2001 Kay moved to the Wellington Retirement home and it was from there that she was taken to the Grace Hospital on September 18, 2002. She was subsequently transferred to the Portage General Hospital on October 24, 2002. Cremation has taken place. At Kays request there will be no service. The cremains will be interred in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto, ON. The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff of the Grace Hospital and a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Ken Parker and the surgical staff of the Portage District General Hospital. If friends wish, donations in Kays memory may be made to the Portage District General Hospital Foundation, 524 5th St. SE, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 3A8. A tree will be planted and cared for in memory of Kay by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel who are entrusted with the arrangements, 857-4021.
