INSPECTOR DOUGLAS GEORGE BYERS R.C.M.P. (Retired) It is with sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Douglas George Byers. He was predeceased by his first wife, Doreen Clyde; his parents, George and Marguerite Byers; his brothers-in-law, Art Carlisle, Rev. Leslie Tarr, Don Strickland and Don Campbell. He leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife and soul mate of 26 years, Agnes (Tarr) Selin Byers and his precious granddaughter Cherrelle, whom he thought of as his own child. He is also survived by his son Robert; daughter Brenda (Terry) Davis; his stepson Shane (Carol) Selin; his stepdaughter Candace (Jeff) Peck; his daughter-in-law Francis Byers; his grandchildren, Douglas and Coreen Byers, Zach and Madison Davis, Drew and Cole Selin; his sister Jean Carlisle of Hamilton; brother-in-law Harvey (Florine) Tarr of Penticton; sisters-in-law, Catherine Tarr, Audrey Campbell and Amy Strickland; his extended family, Gerald, Marlene, Curtis (Leslie), Brent (Colleen) Selin, Roanne (Greg) Bodnarchuk, Moe, Sarah and precious Grace Elowanibi; nieces, nephews, many Masonic Brothers and countless other friends. Doug was born in Niagara Falls on September 21, 1931. He joined the R.C.M.P. on August 31, 1950. Doug was proud to have served in the R.C.M.P. for 35 years, retiring with the rank of Inspector. He loved his work. He was stationed in Churchill, Flin Flon, The Pas, Amaranth, Swan River, McCreary, Ste. Rose du lac, Dauphin, Winnipeg, Ottawa and Thompson. After retirement he joined the R.C.M.P. Veterans Association. Doug was a very active member of the Masonic Order. He was initiated into Freemasonry in Fort Prince of Wales Lodge No. 161 Churchill, MB on April 14, 1953. He was a member of Cornerstone Lodge No. 179 becoming Master of the Lodge in 1990. He was an honorary life member of Red River Lodge No. 172 and St. James Lodge No. 121. In 1996 he was elected District Deputy Grand Master of the First Masonic District, and also appointed to the Board of General Purposes. In 1998 to 2002 he was elected the Grand Director of Ceremonies for the Grand Lodge of Manitoba. Doug was also a member of the Royal Arch Masons, Khartum Shrine and the Royal Order of Scotland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Masonic Foundation, 420 Corydon Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0N8 or to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6. Visitation will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, January 31, at the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 1, at 3:00 p.m. at the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home.
