Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDUDLEY ARMAND PATERSON July 24, 1914 - February 4, 2003 A veteran of Winnipeg broadcasting passed away peacefully at the McCreary Hospital, February 4, 2003. Dudley was born in Fort Rouge. Upon leaving school and after stints at many jobs (oil-field worker, taxi-driver, railway man), he joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers during the Second World War. Upon discharge, he married Nellie Krupa. He found his calling in radio where he enjoyed a colourful and fulfilling career for more than 40 years. He began at the old CKY in Winnipeg and then moved as station manager to CJGX in Yorkton, SK. He then moved back to Winnipeg and station CJOB, which was to be his "broadcast home" for the next 44 years. During these years, Dudleys became a familiar and trusted voice, which brought Winnipeggers the news and views of the time. Highlights were travels on the first Winnipeg-to-Toronto Air Canada flight and to Cape Kennedy for a space launch and, of course, the 1950 flood. Listeners will remember his as one of the voices that kept the city in touch with up-to-date reports (many delivered from a boat on the swollen Red or Assiniboine). In later years, as news editor, he kept pace with the fast-changing world for his listeners. One of his colleagues has remarked, "Dudley was always happiest with a mike in one hand and a cup of tea in the other." His happiest times were the annual summer jaunts to his "Laclu" where he could indulge his favourite pastimes, fishing and photography. After retirement, he and Nellie moved to McCreary, MB to be closer to family. Dudley was predeceased by a brother George; parents, George and Anna; sister Doreen McDonald; brother William (BC) wife Nellie; and daughter Riva. He leaves to contemplate a life "without Dudley, grampa and great-grandpa" his daughter Heather; son-in-law Chuck (McCreary, MB) daughter Lola (Detroit) daughter Lindsey (Qualicum Beach, BC) son George (Vancouver) grandchildren, Tara, Patrick, Andrew, Robin, Jonathon, Lisa, Martin, Terry, Kristen, Dillon, Riley, and Cassandra; and great-grandkids, Meaghan, Nicholas, Evan, and Riley;...and his faithful listeners. In keeping with Dudleys independent spirit, cremation has taken place and there will be a private family memorial service for interment at a later date. "At early morn, when all was still God took his soul to rest In silent peace he passed away Into a better place." We will forever be in debt to the staff of both the McCreary Personal Care Home and Hospital for their devotion and care of our father and grandfather. Friends wishing to make a donation in Dudleys memory may do so to the McCreary/Alonsa Personal Care Home, McCreary, MB, R0J 1B0. Dobchuk Funeral Home, McCreary in care of arrangements.
