GUSTAVE RENE OMER BAEKELAND January 26, 1936 - February 12, 2003 It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of our beloved father, son and grandfather, Gus, at the age of 67. Left to mourn his passing are his three children, Richard, Lisa and Leanne and two incredible grandchildren, Andrew and Hayley. He will also be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his mother Eva; brother Roger (Lee) and sister Rena Parker (Jim). Gus also leaves behind aunt Eva Backeland and aunt Louise De Clercq and many nephews, nieces and cousins. Gus was predeceased by his beloved wife Ruby, just last May and he missed her intensely. He was also predeceased by his father, Omer in June of 1984. Dad was born in Winnipeg where he spent his whole life. He began his lifelong career at Manitoba Hydro when he was 16 years old and when he retired in 1993, he left with many good friends on both sides of the International border. Gus married the love of his life, Ruby, on August 29, 1959 and they raised their children together in their home in Transcona. They were surrounded by wonderful neighbours and friends, many going back almost 40 years. Dad was very involved in all his childrens activities and this continued on to the next generation. He was the best Grandpa in the world! Andrew and Hayley were happy to spend every moment they could with him. Gus, or "Grandpa", was known to all the kids and staff at Joseph Teres School, where he volunteered for the last six years helping with the math program. He had also recently begun volunteering at the St. Boniface General Hospital Palliative Care Ward. Gus believed this to be very worthwhile, as he had spent so much time there with Ruby at the end of her lengthy illness. Gus was also involved with the Knights of Columbus as Advocate, and enjoyed the company of his fellow brothers. The family would like to express their thanks and appreciation to the many friends and family during this difficult time. Special thanks go to Cam and Myrna King, Rena and Jim Parker and Ray Bremault for their love and support. Following cremation, a mass celebrating Gus life will be held at Blessed Sacrament Parish on Tuesday, February 18 at 1:00 p.m. with Fr. Ed Bonin officiating. Flowers gratefully declined. If so desired, donations may be made in Gus memory to Rossbrook House or the St. Boniface General Hospital Palliative Care Unit (Patient Comfort Fund).
