LIDIA MENDELA Peacefully, on Sunday, February 16, 2003, our dear mother and grandmother passed away after a lengthy and valiant battle with heart disease. Mom was born on February 20, 1940 in Nowa Grobla, Lubachiw, W. Ukraine, daughter of Maria and Dmytro Karpiak. She came to Canada in 1958 with her younger brother Mitch. Mom was a proud employee with Government Services for over 25 years, where she made many friends. Along with family, those friendships helped to support Mom through her debilitating illness. Mom leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Irene and husband Craig; grandchildren Alex and Madelaine; daughter, Christina (James) brother Mitch Karpiak (Virginia) and nephews Peter and John; brother-in-law Dmytro Sikora and nephew Walter (Nancy) and their children, Emily and Jennifer, niece Sophie Murphy (Larry) and their children Sean, Megan and Caitlyn, nephew Walter Mendela (Irka) and their children, Stephan and Larissa; sister-in-law Olga Mendela. Mom was predeceased by her husband Paul, her parents and her sister Helen Sikora. Prayers will be sung 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, February, 19 at Christ the King Ukrainian Catholic Church, 263 Fountain Ave. at Logan. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 20 also at the Church with Canon V. Olach officiating. Interment will follow in Holy Family Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Thank you to the nursing staff at 5W Deer Lodge Centre for their care, kindness and consideration, especially Caroline.
