JAMES DICKSON REID On February 14, 2003 "Valentines Day," Jim joined his cherished wife, Betty-Jane, who predeceased him four years ago. Dad was in his 89th year when he passed away peacefully in Duncan, BC with his four daughters at his side. Jim was born in Winnipeg in 1914, the first Canadian born child to his Scottish parents. He was predeceased by two sisters, Anne and Jean; two brothers, John and Dave and survived by his sister Dorothy of Winnipeg. He will be deeply missed by his family, Maralynn (Bryan), Carole (Bob), Janet (Clint) of Calgary and Linda of Vancouver. Grandpa has seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews who will greatly miss his unique youthful sense of fun. Jim enjoyed a lifelong love of sports and during his youth played Junior and Senior Hockey for the Yorkton Terriers and Portage la Prairie Terriers. Following this time he met and married B.J. who was most impressed with the young hockey player on the Norris Grain Team managed by her father. During this time Jim was called into service in the Second World War where he served as a Navigator with the R.C.A.F. Following the war, Jim began his long and rewarding career with General Foods, retiring in 1979, affectionately known as "Jimmy Jell-O." Another life began for Jim and BJ in 1988 when they moved to Arbulus Ridge on Vancouver Island where he became an integral member of the community and Jim could finally golf 12 months of the year. Not forgetting his roots, Jim organized the Manitoba Open Golf Tournament, running now for several years. Jim made friends wherever he went as people were attracted by his warmth, kind soul and unique spirit. Jim and his ukulele were often the life of the party, especially when he made it through the "hard part." And now the hard part has come for all of us as he is put to rest. Jim will be remembered by his family and friends with both laughter and tears. A memorial service to celebrate Jims life was held at Arbutus Ridge on February 20. In Jims memory memorial contributions may be made to the Cowichan District Hospital Foundation, No. 4 - 466 Trans Canada Hwy., Duncan, BC.
