Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryKATHERINE (KAY) BOYKO May 25, 1922 to February 25, 2003 Katherine (Kay) Boyko, a former resident of Selkirk for over 50 years passed away quietly in her sleep on Tuesday, February 25, 2003 and went to be with Jesus. Her two sons and grandson Andrew were at her side at West Park Manor at the time. She was predeceased by her husband Mike in February 2001 and is survived by her loving children, Eileen Harwood of Cochrane, AB, Ken Boyko of Winnipeg, Garry Boyko of Langley, BC and grandsons, Darren, Kerry and Andrew. Born in 1922, Katherine was the youngest of seven children born of Anne and Constantine. Katherine came from hardy Ukrainian stock. At the tender age of 16, Katherines mother immigrated to Canada on her own to earn money for the family back in the Ukraine. Her father worked in a Winnipeg foundry, bicycling there summer and winter until 1933 when he moved the family to a farm homestead in the Parkdale area. Katherine had considered nursing as a possible career but instead, her lifes journey took a different turn. During the Second World War, Katherine worked at Macdonalds No. 5 near Winnipeg Airport, riveting aircraft for the war effort. When she later met her husband in her early 20s and started a family in Selkirk, her entrepreneurial and creative interests also emerged. Always a bundle of energy, over her lifetime she was devoted to her three children, helped in her husbands fuel business, operated her own bedding plant business, bought and sold antiques, painted in oils, sewed clothes that won awards, was an avid gardener, built furniture, made pottery and cared for many animals. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 1 at 1:00 p.m. at West Park Manor, 3199 Grant Ave., Charleswood. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to West Park Manor.
