ROBERT ARTHUR SOMERS Born August 3, 1917 Died February 25, 2003 On Tuesday, February 25, 2003 at the Grace Hospital, Robert Arthur Somers died at the age of 85 years, with family by his side. Robert is survived by his five children and their families, Robert Somers (Jill) of Grand Marais, MN, Beverley Austen of E. Selkirk, MB, Lynne Austen of Selkirk, MB, Cheryl Sovereign (Jim) of Kakabeka Falls, ON and Donald Somers (Judy) of Comox, BC. Dad had 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Jean Martin Somers (nee Leitch) father Malcolm Somers; mother Olive Somers (nee Bell) stepmother Catherine Campbell Somers (nee Dawson) sons-in-law, Graham Austen, Robert Austen; and granddaughter Erin Sovereign. Dad had a passion for reading, exploring, history, woodwork, photography, boating and nature. During his life he was able to pass these interests on to his kids and grandkids. He, Jean and the kids built the family cottage at Big Whiteshell Lake. He loved to explore the Whiteshell area, hiking and boating into the remoter areas. At home the family picnics and get-togethers are traditions, the memories we will cherish forever. Dads dry sense of humour and wit were trademarks along with his attention to detail. These traits served him well in his career as a detective (Ident. Section) with the Winnipeg Police Force for 28 years, retiring in 1973. He served in the R.C.A.F. during the Second World War as Bomber/Navigator - 415 Heavy Bomber Squadron, Eastmoor, Yorkshire, England. From 1951 to 1959 he served 17 Wing Headquarters Western Air Command, looking after security for Western Canada and the Yukon. Dad was a former member of the Home Street United Church and later of the Chalmers United Church. He was one of the original founding members of The Winnipeg Police Credit Union. He was also a founding member of the Puffin Ski Club and Secretary/Treasurer of the Razorback Track Club. Dad was a longtime member of the Royal Canadian Legion (Branch No. 4 and prior Branch No. 1) where he enjoyed having a rum and coke and a shrimp dinner. A celebration of his life will be held at Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway, on Saturday, March 1 at 2:00 p.m. The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Stephenson and staff; the Grace General Hospital, Palliative Care Unit and The Winnipeg Regional Home Care staff. In lieu of flowers please send donations to a charity of your choice. Through Adversity to the Stars THOMSON FUNERAL CHAPELS 783-7211
