Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWILLIAM GORDON HAMPTON On Monday, February 24, 2003 at the Grace Hospital, William Gordon Hampton, beloved husband and father, passed away at the age of 80 years. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Grace Eleanor; sons, Alan of Winnipeg and David of Edmonton; daughter Fern (Robert Meintzer) and grandchildren, Robbie and Caroline Meintzer of Tuscaloosa, AL, USA; sister Irene Walker (John) of Winnipeg; as well as nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister Gretchen (2002) father Henry (1970) and mother Martha (1972). Gordon was born in Transcona on March 21, 1922. As a young man, he was an enthusiastic curler and member of the Transcona Curling Club as well as being interested in a variety of other sports. He joined the Navy and served until 1945 in the Second World War. He met his wife Grace in Halifax and married in 1945. They returned to Winnipeg where Gordon began a career at the CN Transcona Shops which spanned over 40 years ending with his retirement in June 1983. Gordon and Grace raised their family in Riverview District which was the family home for 38 years. It was then they decided to move to St. Vital to spend their retirement years. Gordon will always be remembered by his many friends made there over the years. Also fondly remembered are the many summers spent at the family cottage at Blacks Point which Gordon and Grace built and took pride in for many years. We all have our special memories of our husband, father, uncle, grandpa, and friend. He will be missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 8 at 11:00 a.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., (south of the Royal Canadian Mint). A private family interment has been held at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens. The family wishes to thank Dr. MacEachern and the staff at Grace Hospital for their care during the last month of his life.
