THORVALDUR STEFAN (VALDI) BJORNSSON Thorvaldur Stefan (Valdi) Bjornsson was born June 24, 1931 at Lundar, MB, the youngest of seven children. He passed away peacefully with family at his side at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg on March 1, 2003. He was predeceased by parents, Bjorn and Bjorg; his brothers, Bjorn, Magnus and Eric; and sister Sigrun Cruise; brothers-in-law, Steve Arnason, Geiri Eiriksson and Bill Cruise; sister-in-law Kay; and four nieces and nephews. He is survived by sisters, Gudny Eiriksson and Lara Arnason of Lundar; sister-in-law Margaret Bjornson of Winnipeg. Also the "lights of his life" his many nieces and nephews and their families. Valdi will also be remembered by his Sigurdson and Johnson cousins. He looked after his sisters very well and he will be missed around the card table, at the golf course and in everyones lives. He was blessed with a great sense of humour and the gift of storytelling; his stories will live on for generations to come by his family and friends. Valdi was born and spent his entire life in the Mary Hill District where he began farming at age 16. After many years of Holstein dairy farming, followed by beef cattle and eventually fieldwork, Valdi retired to enjoy his gardening and his recreation. He played baseball until he was 43 and curled until the late 90s when he took up 5-pin bowling. In 2002 his team won the Manitoba Seniors Bowling gold medal and then the silver medal for Canada. He began golfing in his mid-50s and travelled to many golf courses in Manitoba and U.S.A. He enjoyed ice fishing and casino bus tours with his friends. He maintained good health and continued to do all the things he enjoyed right up until his demise. He was a strong supporter in the community; he worked with the Lundar Ag. Society for 37 years, he was a director of the board in the Curling Club and treasurer of Lundar Golf Club for 14 years. He was on their Board of Directors of Lundar New Horizon Club. In 1999 he received an appreciation award for community service, of which he was very proud. At Valdis request cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 7 at the Lundar Community Hall, with Rev. Melanie Kauppila officiating. Service will conclude at the hall, with interment to be held at a later date. The family wishes to express its deepest appreciation to the staff of Health Sciences Centre ICU and Eriksdale Hospital. Flowers are gratefully declined; donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Suite 200, 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6 or to the Lundar Golf Club, Lundar, Manitoba, R0C 1Y0.
