WALTER NOWOSAD 1918 - 2003 Walter passed away on Sunday afternoon, March 2, 2003 at the St. Boniface Hospital after a short period of hospitalization at the age of 84. He faced his illness with candor and humour and maintained his spirit until the end. Walter leaves his loving wife Jean; and his two sons, Dan, age 51, a lawyer in Port Hardy, BC, and Neale, age 48, an airline pilot in Hong Kong. Jean, Dan and Neale were fortunate to be with Walter in his final days. Walter also leaves three granddaughters, Rachel 19, Laura 17 and Avery 10. He also leaves his sisters, Jean, Olive; and brother Myron. Walter was born on September 27, 1918 in Rossburn, MB. He began his long and distinguished teaching career in 1937 at Jackfish Lake School but then served in the R.C.A.F. from 1941 through 1945 in Radar with service overseas. Walter resumed teaching after the Second World War with a stint as an Audio-Visual consultant in rural Manitoba and Saskatchewan when he met his future wife Jean Forestell in Biggar, SK. Jean and Walter were married in 1948. From 1947 through 1951 Walter attended the University of Manitoba where he attained a B.A. and a B. Ed. Walter then resumed teaching in Roblin, MB in 1951 and 1952. From 1952 Walter taught at Glenlawn in St. Vital and in 1956/57 was Principal at Varennes School and then Principal at Norberry from 1957 through 1967. Walter ended his career as Principal at Dakota Collegiate from 1967 and served there until his retirement in 1980. Walters career was distinguished by both public service and and service to his profession. He held various positions as president of the Champlain Community Club and as a member of the Board of Directors of the United Way. Professionally he was proud to have served as President of the Manitoba Teachers Society in 1971 and 1972. Walter was also a member and president of many other educational and advisory committees. He was a recipient of the Canadian Silver Jubilee Medal. Walter loved to fish and was a lifelong active curler. He also excelled at bad golf and passed on his flair with the game to his sons, Dan and Neale. Walter was active in the church and was a Vestry member at St. Pauls Anglican Church in Fort Garry. Walter will also be fondly remembered by his fellow Rotarians of the St. Boniface - St Vital chapter. Walter led a full and active life until the end, enjoying an active and lengthy retirement. He was also proud of his long volunteer service with the Lifeline Program of Victoria Hospital. He will be missed and fondly remembered by his family, friends, colleagues and former students. A funeral service will be held today on Wednesday, March 5 at St. Pauls Anglican Church on Point Road in Fort Garry at 10:00 a.m. A light luncheon will follow. A private interment ceremony will follow at Glen Eden Cemetery for immediate family and friends. Special thanks are offered to the caring staff of St. Boniface Hospital and to Dr. P.G. Mehta. In lieu of flowers donations would be appreciated to the Manitoba Lung Association or to the St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care Program.
