Vasyl was born in Koniukhiv, Western Ukraine on January 6, 1915. He was the third of five children born to Rosalia (nee Bryk) and Hryhorij Roszko. He was conscripted into the Russian Army during the Second World War and was caught and interned by the Germans. He then joined the U.N.A. From 1945 to 1947 he was housed by the British in Italy and then was shipped to England by the British. He resided in England until 1957. Vasyl immigrated to Canada, docked in Halifax, then drove his trusted motorcycle to Hamilton and on to Winnipeg. Here he worked for many years as a butcher and sausage maker at M & S Meats, retiring at age 75. Vasyl enjoyed many phone calls, letters and happy visits from his son Neil and later with daughter-in-law Lorraine and grandchildren, Adam, Natalie and Marcus who all reside in Australia. He was predeceased by his parents, sisters Olha and Stefka. He is survived by his sister Kacia in Koniukhiv, brother Bohdan (Maria) of Hamilton and numerous nieces and nephews in Canada and Ukraine. He will be fondly remembered by friends and family for his generous heart, his humour and as his granddaughter writes - "for his gentle smile and his soft blue eyes". Panahyda will be celebrated by Rev. Kouts at St. Vladimir & Olga Cathedral at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5. Private interment will take place in N.S.W. Australia.
