Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryTADEUS ZUCHOWSKI "TED" It is with great sadness that Helen Zuchowski announces the death of her husband Tadeus (Ted) on March 2, 2003 after a short illness. Ted was born November 29, 1915 and edu-cated in Gdansk. In the first week of the Second World War, the ship he was serving on was bombed by Germany and Ted became one of the first prisoners of war. After two attempts to escape, another bombing by the English of the railway car he was working near, allowed him to escape to France. The French Underground managed to help him reach Gibraltar, where he boarded a ship to England. Later in Scotland, a Polish unit was formed under British auspices and Ted returned to Europe to fight as a tank Commander for three years. Following the amnesty, he returned to England to become a gardener, Psychiatric Nurse, and then Registered Nurse. In 1957 he came to Canada as a nurse in North Battleford Psychiatric Hospital. Two years later he was encouraged to study Social Work and graduated with a Masters Degree from University of Manitoba. In August, 1960, he and Helen were married in Winnipeg. He worked as a Director of Psychiatric Services in Winnipeg and then as a Psychiatric Social Worker of Manitoba, retiring in 1982. He was associated with Polish Veterans and Polish Press. He had a continuing interest in The Schizophrenia Society of Manitoba. Ted was seven years of age when he was predeceased by his father. His mother died during the Second World War. He leaves to mourn his beloved wife of 43 years Helen; in-laws, Ann Sawatsky, Olga Friesen, Drs. William and Donna Friesen; and many cherished nieces, nephews and their families.
