DOUGLAS WILLIAM JOHN HAY On March 6, 2003, Douglas Hay passed away in Kenora, ON. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 43 years, Zelma Anne Hay (Kelunick). Born August 4, 1932 in Austin, MB, Doug moved to Winnipeg at age 10, where he lived until 1987. In June of that year he became a permanent resident of West Hawk Lake. Starting in 1994, he spent six months a year at his home in Florida. After receiving his Chartered Accountant degree in 1956, Doug went into private practice. In 1971 the accounting practice was sold and he continued to manage the Winnipeg Police and United Grain Growers Credit Unions until 1979. In 1980 he started Facs Records Centre in Winnipeg and was President of that firm until its sale in March of 1997. Throughout his business career he also started or was active in Belco Leasing Ltd., United Credit Control, Century Motors, Dataways Ltd. and Winnipeg Management Consultants. Since 1989 he had been a co-owner, with his family, of the Falcon Lake Resort Hotel and in 1998 they purchased the Lake of the Woods Hotel in Kenora and in 2001 acquired one-half of the Grand Sands Motor Inn near Grand Beach. Doug kept abreast of current events and took great pleasure in his discussions with friends on all subjects, especially politics. He was happiest in his role as a business entrepreneur and thoroughly enjoyed taking part in all forms of business related activities and try to make it work. A former member of the Granite Curling Club, Southwood and Bell Acres Golf Clubs he enjoyed his frequent trips to Winnipeg to golf and socialize. He cherished the close friendships that he formed as a member of the Gyro Club of Winnipeg. Doug is survived by his sons, Derek (Gail) Hay and Jamie (Kim) Hay; grandchildren, Crystal, Brittney, Austin, Megan, Ian, Allison; and his sister Barbara McAllister. The family would like to thank Judy Blake-Knox, Dennis Curle and the nursing staff at the Kenora Hospital for their generous help and kindness. Cremation has taken place. A social gathering for friends and relatives will take place on March 10 at 2:00 p.m. in the Norwood Hotels Tache Room. Another gathering will take place at the Falcon Lake Resort Hotel on March 14 at 2:00 p.m. Flowers gratefully declined. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044
