JEAN DIERCKENS (nee SHERMAN) June 7, 1935 - March 8, 2003 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Jean at the Victoria Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Jean was predeceased by her parents Mary and Peter Sherman; brothers, Tommy and Peter; sisters, Jessie, Rose, Elizabeth and Clara. Jean leaves to mourn her loving husband of 45 years Jack; son Blair and daughter Tracy; grand-children, Daryl, Karl, and Jeanna; sister Molly; mother-in-law Bessy; sisters-in-law Del, Shirley and Mary, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Jean grew up with her brother Peter and sisters on the family farm in Oak Bluff, where she developed many friendships that remain to this day. Jean loved the country dances and driving on the country roads. After high school, Jean worked in the city and continued to spend weekends at home. In November of 1956 she was introduced to Jack, and they were married the following summer. In the early 1960s they built the family home in Fort Garry, and set up a trailer on a river lot at Timber Lodge, both of which they enjoyed throughout their years together. For most of their marriage mom was a devoted homemaker, looking after all of her familys needs and taking pride in maintaining a spotless home. Mom also always found time for fun with her many friends, often only slowing down after midnight to watch her favorite soaps on tape. For many years she enjoyed curling at the Pembina Curling Club, and her part time work there to earn "Bingo Money". Bingo at the Eagles Club was another of moms great passions. In later years she also loved her part time work at Child and Family Services, and bus trips south of the border with friends. Mom maintained her sense of humour and zest for life to the end. The family would like to express its sincere appreciation to the doctors and staff of the 5th floor and Oncology Departments of the Victoria Hospital for their dedication and compassion to mom and the family during this most difficult time. We would like to thank the many family and friends who supported mom and us throughout her illness and final days with meals, visits, words of encouragement and hugs. You will forever hold a special place in our hearts. According to Jeans wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 11 at 2:00 p.m. at Garry Memorial Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oncology Department, Victoria General Hospital, 2340 Pembina Hwy., Winnipeg, MB R3T 2E8.
