PAULINE MIRUS Peacefully, after a brief illness, on Sunday, March 9, 2003, Pauline Mirus of Winnipeg. Pauline is survived by her son Michael; daughter-in-law Michele (Mimi) and three beloved grandchildren, Nicholas, Madeline and Joseph; sisters Ellen Bayrack (Calgary), Phyllis and husband Alec Zec (Old, AB.) sisters-in-law Jean and husband Walter (Winnipeg), Sophie Mokris (California) and numerous nieces and nephews. Pauline was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Mary (Korol) Zurawel, her sisters Lena and Josephine, and her husband of 50 years, Michael who died in 1996. Born on February 14, 1925 in Netook, AB., Pauline grew up in Olds, AB., the second youngest of five daughters. From an early age she was active in community life as a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Youth Club in Calgary. She came as a delegate to the first Ukrainian Catholic Congress held in Winnipeg. On marrying Michael in 1946, whom she had known since childhood, Pauline moved to Winnipeg. Their son, Michael, was born in 1947. Pauline and her husband joined the Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral, and began a life-long association with the parish. They both were members of the parish council. Pauline joined the Ukrainian Catholic Womens League of Canada, and held various executive positions including president of her own branch. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Holy Family Nursing Home for 38 years, serving as president and Nursing Home Board member. As a young mother, Pauline worked nights for five years at Kelekis Restaurant, and in 1956 became a secretary at St. Johns High School, a position she held for 30 years, retiring in 1986. She loved working in the busy high school office during the 1960s and 1970s, and brought a remarkable dedication, intelligence and humour to the job. After Michaels death in 1996, Pauline lived at the Holy Family Towers, 147 Aberdeen Avenue. Living among the people who had been her community for close to 60 years, she wrote for the Towers newsletter. As well, she maintained her involvement with the UCWL, the Cathedral, and developed two columns for Progress Ukrainian Catholic News. These columns, "Who Are We" and "We Chit Chat", highlighted the achievements of the Ukrainian Catholic community in Manitoba. Researching and writing these monthly articles delighted her, as did her friendships with family and friends. She had a close relationship with Michael, Mimi and her grandchildren, Nicholas, Madeline and Joseph. They were a pleasure to her, and she loved them deeply. Family, friends and community will all miss her very much. Prayers will be sung 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 13 at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral, 115 McGregor St.. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 14 also at the Cathedral with Rev. M. Kouts officiating. Internment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. Pauline was very appreciative of the care she received from Dr. Lezack and the nurses in the Oncology Unit at Seven Oaks Hospital. In accordance with her wishes, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Oncology Unit, Seven Oaks Hospital, 2300 McPhillips St. Winnipeg, MB R3V 3M3.
