Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryELLEN GERTRUDE CALLIN Ellen Gertrude Callin went to be with our Lord on March 6, 2003. She had just celebrated her 97th birthday. She was born February 26, 1906 on a farm near Percival, SK and was the oldest daughter of John Manley Callin and his wife, Anna (Vickberg). Gertrude was predeceased by her parents, three sisters, Nancy, Lorna and Verna and four brothers, Lesley, Joseph, Elmer and Manley. She is survived by one sister Norma Fredlund of Broadview, SK, many nieces and nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews and many friends in many places are left with wonderful memories of Gertrude. Gertrude received her early education at Park School, Whitewood, SK and Roblin, MB. She attended Normal School in Moose Jaw and over a period of 12 years taught at Midale, Nipawin, Park School and Forest Farm School. She went to Winnipeg General Hospital where she took her nurses training and then went to McGill University for her degree in nursing. From Quebec she returned to the Winnipeg General Hospital and taught nursing until she retired and moved back to Saskatchewan. On Gertrudes return to Saskatchewan she worked with the Saskatchewan Tuberculosis Association out of Fort San, training nurses to deal with tuberculosis patients. She moved to Saskatchewan and taught at the TB Sanatorium until it closed. During her lifetime, Gertrude did extensive travelling, made many friends and enjoyed life to the fullest. Her favourite pastimes were hiking, birdwatching with her brothers, Elmer and Manley and the Saskatoon Golden Eagles and just being with friends and family. In 1982 she was a founding member of the Saskatoon Seniors Continued Learning Program at the university. She was Secretary Treasurer (1983 to 1984/1985) and then became President in 1985. She was also on the Board of Directors and in 1988 was asked to become the Archivist and continued to 2002. Up until two years ago, she attended several classes at the university each year. She was also very active in St. Thomas Wesley United Church in Saskatoon and was very committed to her faith in God. In keeping with Gertrudes wishes, a graveside service will be held in the Whitewood Cemetery in the summertime. Arrangements were entrusted to Matthews Funeral Home, Whitewood, SK.
