DOUGLAS M. ROSE, D.F.C., 1919 - 2003 It is with great sadness that Joyce Rose (Costello) and family announce that Doug, a retired pilot, has taken his last flight. Doug passed away at Riverview Health Centre, Wednesday, March 12, 2003. Doug was raised in Stony Mountain, MB. He lived a full life that held many loves, including hockey with the Winnipeg Monarchs, the Harringay Racers in England, his dog Rosemary, a good joke, homemade crabapple jelly and a cold beer. Dougs aviation career began with flying Hurricanes, regrouping to RAF Bomber Command and flying his beloved Lancaster with the finest crew a pilot ever had. Back in Canada, following the Second World War, he began commercial aviation with Central Northern Airways, through Transair, Pacific Western Airlines, retiring from Canadian Airlines in 1980. The years with Transair and the people who were part of the company, were dear to his heart. Doug was predeceased by son Jeff; granddaughter Leigh Anne; brothers, Tom and Donald in the Second World War; sister Cecile and brother Dick. Grandchildren who loved him and will miss him are Ashleigh Marsh, Michael MacDonald and Janelle Bryce of Winnipeg, Alexis Marsh of Toronto, Erin and Morgan MacDonald of Calgary, Tom Dennison and daughter Kaitlyn of Thunder Bay. Remembering their childhood years together, his cousin Eleanor Becker of Okanagan Falls, BC, has been his companion and friend during the last few weeks. He was dearly loved and will be missed by stepfamilies, Jim and Jane ONeal, of Whitehorse, Joy and Mel Marsh of Winnipeg and David and Rae MacDonald of Calgary, and by Mary Helen Bryce of Winnipeg and Donald Rose of Thunder Bay. The family wishes to thank doctors, R. Nason, G. Assuras, S. Welch and W. Van Horne for their care over the years. Thanks also to those who gave him extra special care, Unit GH-5 of the Health Sciences Centre, CancerCare Manitoba, especially Jennie, and Riverview Health Centre. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to CancerCare Manitoba in his memory. Please join us for a celebration of Dougs life on Monday, March 17 at 1:30 p.m. at the Western Canada Aviation Museum, Hanger T2, 958 Ferry Rd.
