Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDOREEN MAVIS SIGURDSON July 11, 1923 - March 15, 2003 It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Doreen Sigurdson at the Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg on Saturday, March 15, 2003. Born in Winnipeg to Gertrude and Richard Hayden, Doreen was older sister to Sheila and Trevor. During her final year at Kelvin High School in Winnipeg she met the love of her life, Baldur Sigurdson. After graduation Doreen worked as a bank clerk in downtown Winnipeg. At 19 she married Baldur. They shared 59 years together, ending with Baldurs death August 7, 2002. In their years together Baldur and Doreen lived in Winnipeg, Souris, Montreal, Edmonton, Calgary and Sarnia where they formed friendships that would last a lifetime. She leaves to mourn her children, Eric (Jeanne), Elise (Peter) and Christine (Brian) her grandchildren, Christen, Jehane, Jon, Leif, Anna, Lars, Kristian and Emile; and her great-grandchildren, Molly and Alice. Doreen will always be remembered for her gentle kindness and the joy she took in being with family and friends. With her calming, soft voice she imbued her family with a love and respect for lifes simple pleasures. Wherever the family lived she made home a place of warmth and welcome and delighted in seeing her children and grandchildren grow, learn and dream. Providing support and encouragement to her growing family was the focal point of Doreens life. She took pride in learning about her family roots in County Carlow, Ireland and enjoyed maintaining ties with her extended family in Montreal. Doreen loved life. The beautiful irises and roses she grew in her garden were a pleasure to be shared, as were the sweaters she knit, and the meals and the superb jams and preserves she made. She had a keen eye for the subtlety of good design, whether it was an old building, a well-made garment, a painting or a lovely chair. She delighted in watching birds and recording the ones that visited their yard, especially the hummingbirds. For Doreen, the year seemed to begin anew with the arrival of robins in the spring. In Sarnia, Doreen was an active member of the Grace United Church and the United Church Womens group. After her children had lives of their own, Doreen began working as a librarian at Lambton County Library. She was an avid reader and enjoyed being with others in the company of books. It was during this time that she renewed her love of golf, a game she had often played as a young woman. In her later years, Doreen happily recalled many Sunday games of golf played with Baldur at Huron Oaks. Doreen and Baldur often travelled to western Canada and Florida to visit family and friends before moving back to Winnipeg four years ago. A celebration of Doreens life will be held on Tuesday, March 18 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Riverview Health Centre at 1 Morley Ave. Doreens family extends great appreciation and gratitude to the physicians, nurses and staff of Health Sciences Centre for their wonderful care and special thanks to Dr. J. Johnston, Dr. R Stimpson, Dr. S Kowalski and the nurses of the SICU. Safe journey of the wings of a dove our beloved Doreen. THOMSON FUNERAL CHAPELS 783-7211
