Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryFREDRICK JOHN HARTENBERGER It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Fred Hartenberger, aged 80 on Sunday, March 16, 2003, with his family by his side at the Selkirk General Hospital. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 55 years, Erna; his daughters, Charlene (Gary), Dennene (Lawrence) and grandchildren, Laine and Reid. Fred is also survived by his sister Edna Hill of Weyburn, brother Ken (Myrna) Hartenberger of Edmonton and nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, John and Lena; an infant brother; his brother Albert; sister-in-law Hazel; brother-in-law Dave and an infant nephew. Fred was born December 23, 1922 in Benson, SK. He moved to Manitoba, there he met and married Erna in 1948 and they farmed in East Selkirk until 1967. After the flood of 67 they moved their house, and two young children to their residence on St. Peters Rd. They resided there until moving to Selkirk in 2001. Fred was employed with the Manitoba Government at the Selkirk Mental Health Centre as an electrician for 29 years. He retired in 1983, with 33 years of service. Fred had many passions-carpentry, fishing, camping, hunting and he also took great joy together with his wife in their wine making. If someone ever needed Freds help he was always there willing to give a hand. He could strike up a conversation with anybody, even total strangers and end up talking for hours. He was a long standing member of the Selkirk Evangelical Lutheran Church, and served on church council for many years. He was also a founding member of the East Selkirk Rec. Centre, where he spent countless hours doing everything from shovelling dirt to being on the board of directors. His greatest passion of all was his family. We enjoyed many summer vacations travelling in our van, that Dad converted into a RV. No matter how busy he was, dad always had time to sit down and spend time with us. Dad thought the world of his son-in-laws, and his two little angels. Laine and Reid loved the rides that Papa would give them on the John Deere. Mom has been the light of dads life, and together they have fulfilled their life long dream. Freds pallbearers are Bill Paskaruk, Doug Youzwa, Al Phillips, Clifford Waytiuk, Frank Van De Weyer and Ralph Smolinski. Prayers will be held on Thursday, March 20 at 7:00 p.m. Gilbarts Funeral Home, Selkirk, MB. Funeral services will be held at the Selkirk Evangelical Lutheran Church, 329 Clandeboye Ave., Selkirk on Friday March 21 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Stan Richards officiating. Interment to follow at the Lutheran cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Freds name to the Selkirk Evangelical Lutheran Church or the Heart and Stroke Fund. A special thank you to Dr. Fuchs, Dr. Antonenko and the wonderful nursing staff at the Selkirk and District General Hospital for the exceptional care dad received. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
