THOMAS JAMES (JIM) McGRATH It is with sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Thomas James McGrath on Thursday, March 20, 2003 at Riverview Health Centre, at the age of 84 years. Jim is survived by his wife of 56 years, Anne and their four daughters, Gailene MacLeod (Ian) of Halfmoon Bay, BC, Carol Rykszynski (Pete) of Winnipeg, Lynne McGrath (Arthur Geikie) of Gibsons, BC and Sharon McGrath (John Grimshaw) of Winnipeg. He also leaves to mourn his passing six grandchildren, Shawn DeSchutter (Krista and Kevin) of White Rock, BC, Sarah and Ashley MacLeod of Vancouver, BC, Devon and Kellyn Randall and Bethany Rykszynski of Winnipeg. Dad was born on February 24, 1919 in Winnipeg, where he resided all his life. He was the youngest son of Edward and Carrie McGrath. He was predeceased by both parents, brother Reg and sister Peggy Williams. Dad lived in the Elmwood area throughout his earlier years with his parents. In 1946, Dad married Mom in Winnipeg and became a member of the Burym family. They started their family in the Fort Rouge area and later moved to St. Boniface, with their four teenagers. Dad resided in St. Boniface until he became ill with Parkinsons disease. He then lived at the Riverview Health Centre for the past seven years. Dad was employed by the Winnipeg School Division No. 1 for 45 years until retirement in 1981. Although Dad was a quiet man, he had a quick sense of humour. He enjoyed social gatherings with family and friends. Dad liked being the family chauffeur, providing rides to whom ever needed them. Dad was always fortunate in being able to have a car or rather the car was always fortunate to have Dad. Raindrops or snowflakes never lasted long on his cars, oil was methodically changed and brakes were annually set up. One of Dads dreams came true when the family moved to St. Boniface and he was finally able to have a double car garage. Many evenings were spent rearranging the contents of that garage. He knew everything he had and where to find it and it all meant something to him. It was his quiet place to go, as life with five women can be overwhelming. Dad always enjoyed his summer vacations whether it was to the farm in Durban or to the campgrounds at Falcon Lake. Whichever route he chose it was always carefully mapped out. The family vacations had taken us from coast to coast. No one could pack a car trunk better than Dad. Dad had a soft spot for dogs and cats. Throughout most of his life he had a pet. He always had time to chat with a dog or cat. The family would like to thank the dedicated staff in D2 Wing at the Riverview Health Centre for their continuing care and concern for our husband, father and grandfather. Their support will not be forgotten. Thank you for the words, the hugs and the ice cream you have given Dad. Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 26 at 1:30 p.m. at Riverview Health Centre Chapel, 1 Morley Pl. Donations in Jims memory can be made to the charity of choice. Arrangements entrusted to: GLEN EDEN FUNERAL HOME 4477 MAIN STREET 338-7111
