Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDONALD ARTHUR HAYWARD Donald Arthur Hayward, born April 27, 1915 in North Battleford, SK died peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Friday, March 21, 2003 with his loving family at his side. Don spent his early years in Oakville, MB. He was the second eldest of four sons born to Mark and Ruby Hayward. He attended Normal School in Brandon, where he obtained his teaching certificate. Don taught school in a one-room school house in Beautiful Valley north of Oakville. After moving to Winnipeg, he worked for Armstrong Distributors. On September 27, 1941 he married Ann McKenzie. Soon after, he joined the RCAF where he served as a navigator overseas during the Second World War. Following the war, Don and his brother Fred established Hayward Lumber Wholesale, a business in Winnipeg, which he operated until his retirement in 1982. Don was an avid curler and golfer. He was a longtime member of the Granite Curling Club and the Southwood Golf and Country Club. He represented the Province of Manitoba at the Seniors Level in Curling. Don was also a shrewd poker player and enjoyed many evenings of card playing with his poker buddies. Don and Ann raised two sons, Tony and Steve. He was very supportive of their activities and endeavors. He was also a proud grandfather to his four grandchildren. Don and Ann were happily married for 46 years. Ann predeceased him in 1988. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Fred and Gordon. When Dons health failed, he moved to Brandon in July 2000, to be closer to his sons and their families. He resided at Riverheights Terrace before moving into Fairview Personal Care Home in June 2002. Don is survived by a brother Alan (Karen) of Seattle, WA; sisters-in-law, June Hayward, of Qualicum Beach, BC and Ede Hayward of Winnipeg; sons, Tony (Pat) and Steve (Leslie) grandchildren, Tobin, Deidre, Michael and Stephanie; and many nieces and nephews and their families. Memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 25 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson Society of Manitoba, 204-825 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3B 0R3.
