GEORGE JACOB ACKERMAN It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of our husband, father and grandfather at home on March 31, 2003. George will be lovingly missed by his wife Margaret; his children, Tom and his wife Carol; Christine McInnis and her husband Blake; Stephen and his wife Tracy; his grandchildren, Grant, Graham, Matthew and Lauren and many close friends. George was born January 22, 1933 in Rutland, BC and was the youngest of a large family. He was predeceased by his siblings, Emily, Stan, Joe, John, Art and Ed and will be missed greatly by Lydia, Gene, Mary, Barb, Frank and Minard and numerous nieces and nephews. He was married in June 1960 and eventually settled in Winnipeg with his family. He was employed by H.A. Sheldon-Tandy brands for the past thirty-five years. George has always given back to his community be it through coaching and managing the teams his children played on, or by being involved with the Knights of Columbus (1107), Associated Canadian Travellers, his church, his curling (Pembina) or golf club (Teulon). He was always willing to lend a hand to those who needed him. He was a survivor of throat and lung cancer who had his voice box removed in 1984. He gave many hours to the Canadian Cancer Society (Manitoba Division) and to CancerCare Manitoba helping others who suffered from the disease as well as educating young people on the dangers of smoking. George was the president of the New Voice Club of Manitoba and held many positions including president on the board of the International Association of Larengectomees. He still was active as the past president, which showed his dedication to the others for which he received many awards and accolades. Funeral mass will be celebrated by Fr. Michael Koryluk at the St. John Brebeuf Roman Catholic Church, John Brebeuf Place at Renfrew St. in River Heights on Saturday, April 5 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Georges memory to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3G 9Z9 or to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. LECLAIRE BROTHERS in care of arrangements. 775-2220

  • After all this time, I just learned through the magic of the internet that George had passed away many years ago. I knew George from curling at the club, and remember him as always a fine gentleman. RIP George. - Posted by: Alan Grant (Curling friend) on: Mar 27, 2021
