CLARA HELM (nee SONTAG) Peacefully, with her family at her side, after a short but courageous battle with cancer, at the St. Boniface Hospital, Clara Helm, aged 71 years, passed away on the morning of April 2, 2003. She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband of 51 years, Evard; her children, Melody (Gene), Gary (Coriene), Greg (Ronda), Garland (Nancy), Myra (Rod), and Michele (Garth) her 12 grandchildren, Amanda, Scott, Terry, Lyndsey, Darren, Alana, Melissa, Janelle, Lauren, Brittany, Branden and Jarrett; one great-grandchild, Ainsley; brothers and sisters, Hertha Brown (Marty) of Reno, NV, Fred (Selene) of Mapleridge, BC, Thelma Mueller (Ron) and Nina Kakoschke (Garry) both of Kelowna, BC, Earl (Lynda) of Comox, BC, and Victor (Maureen) of Mitchell, MB; as well as many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Clara was predeceased by her parents, Natalie and Jacob; and her brother Roy. She was born in Manitou, MB on July 22, 1931 and raised in Moosehorn, MB. Clara and her husband moved to Winnipeg and later to St. Andrews where she resided until her passing. Mom had a quiet competitive nature, and was always there to listen. She had a soft touch when it came to newborn babies, eager to hold and comfort them. Mom also had a keen business sense having organized and planned their finances. Family was very important, Grandma enjoyed spending quality time with her grandchildren and those memories will be with us forever. Mom had a fulfilling, active and healthy life. Mom enjoyed many years together with Dad in retirement golfing, bowling, gardening, cottaging at Grindstone and 10 years wintering in McAllen, TX where they made many friends. Their special place "the hobby farm" near Camp Morton gave them hours of pleasure and much enjoyment. Friends and family are invited for visitation on Friday, April 4 (tonight), from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, 309 Eveline St, Selkirk. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 5 at 10:30 a.m. also in the chapel with Rev. Bruce Martin officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Clements Cemetery, Selkirk. The family would like to express their gratitude for the care and compassion that the nurses and staff gave to Mom and Dad while at the Palliative Care Unit in the St. Boniface Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations in Claras memory can be made to the Sunday School Bus Ministry at the Calvary Temple, 400 Hargrave St., Winnipeg, MB R3B 3A8. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
