Dad was born November 27, 1920 in Bialkrynca (White River), Tarnopol, Poland. He was the second youngest of 10 children born to Anna and John. In the early part of the Second World War, Dad spent time in a number of labour camps in Russia. He eventually found his way into a Polish Division of the British Army, serving in the Middle East and Italy. After the war ended Dad remained in Italy until 1946 when he travelled to England. He enrolled in a program that took him to Saskatchewan and then Manitoba to complete a two-year farm contract. In 1949, Dad became an employee of the CNR at the Transcona Shops, where he worked for 36 years, retiring in 1985. In 1951, Walter married Jenny and was adopted by the Malmas family of Meadows, MB.
