OGMUNDUR (SIGGI) SIGURDUR AUSTFJORD Peacefully on April 8, 2003, Siggi Austfjord formerly of Hecla Island and late of the village of Riverton, passed away at the Betel Home in Gimli. Siggi was predeceased by his parents, Gudmundur and Gudfinna Austfjord; his brother Jon; his infant daughter and daughter Heather; and by his sisters, Chrissie and Margaret. Dad will be missed by his three children, Jon, Signey (Peter) and Brian (Donna) his eight grandchildren, Steven (Kerri), Bren (Bill), Heidi (Dale), Tommy (Wendy), Christie (Justin), Asia, Rachelle, Nathaniel; his five great-grandchildren, Sarah, Rachel, Amy, Kirstin and Shawn. Dad was born at Strum-ness on Hecla Island on March 17, 1916. Dads parents moved the family to Selkirk in 1918 then returned to Hecla in 1929. Siggi and his brother Jon worked together until the lake took Jons life. Dad provided well for his Mother and Father until their rest. Dad worked with his brother-in-law and learned the craft of boat building where he excelled creating his own design which was highly regarded on Lake Winnipeg. Dad learned carpentry from the Audel Books and grew into one of the finest Journeyman Carpenters. In 1953 Dad engineered and constructed the cribbing and support poles that brought the first hydro lines into Hecla Island. He continued fishing as well until the lake closed due to Mercury. After moving to Riverton, Dad worked in the north running many projects for Northern Affairs, Manitoba Hydro and Freshwater Fish Marketing Corp. Dad was very proud of his Icelandic Heritage and was known as an historian of early settlers of the area. Dad retired and lived independently until the later years residing at the Arborg Personal Care Home for two years and the last three years at Gimli Betel. Our family would like to thank all the staff at Betel for their kindness, loving care and patience lots of patience. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at the Hecla Lutheran Church on Saturday, April 12 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Neill von Gunten officiating.
