Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDANIEL HJORTUR (HOOK) BACKMAN Peacefully on April 5, 2003, Daniel passed away at the Concordia Hospital. Dad was born on February 9, 1923 in Clarkleigh, MB, where he attended school and worked the family farm until he left around the age of 21 and moved to Winnipeg. Dad served in the army for a year (stationed in Winnipeg) during the Second World War before taking a position with Winnipeg Electric driving streetcars. He also drove truck for Ashdowns (where he met Mom) before taking a job with Mack Trucks where he worked for 31 years before retiring in 1987. Daniel is survived by his wife Stella, son Darryl and daughter Karen (Kevin). Also surviving are his brothers, Harold (Adeline), Charles (Linda), Winston (Diane), Earl (Candace) sister Dorothy; stepmother Vera; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his mother Kristin; father Gudni; brother Krisjan; sisters, Elinor and Clara; and brother-in-law Keith. Dad always enjoyed playing his fiddle and getting together with his family and their instruments whenever possible, playing the music that they loved. This was something they had been doing since they were teenagers, playing at local dances. Daniel was a quiet, gentle and kind man who will be missed by all. The family wishes to extend their thanks to everyone who cared for him at Concordia Hospital N3W, especially Sara, your patience and compassion with Dad was greatly appreciated. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 10 at 1:30 p.m. in Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway with interment to follow in Garry Memorial Park.
