JOHN (JACK) FARQUHARSON RYAN Peacefully, on Monday, April 7, 2003, John Ryan passed away at the Grace Hospital at the age of 83 years. Jack was born in Aberdeen, Scotland. Eleven months later, he was "imported" to Canada, arriving at the Port of Quebec aboard the Empress of France. Jack spent most of his life in Winnipeg. He was educated at St. Ignatius Parochial and St. Pauls High Schools. In 1966, Jack was admitted to the Chartered Accountants Institute of Manitoba. He was employed by the Government of Canada in 1939 and except for the Second World War years, he remained in government service until his retirement in 1979 as chief auditor with the Audit Service Bureau of the Department of Supply and Services. Jack enlisted with the R.C.A.F. in Ottawa in 1941. He served in Canada and Iceland until 1946. Friends lost and living from that time remained an important part of his life. Throughout his life, Jack took an active interest in sports, having played baseball, tennis, bowling, golf and curling. He was a member of the Charleswood Golf and Country Club until it disbanded in 2001. He was a member of the Wildewood Seniors Recreation Association. He was a member of a group of aging adolescents who golfed under the assumed name of "The Racoons". Jack derived a great deal of pleasure and satisfaction from his service to others. He was a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Colombus, Charter Member, Past Grand Knight, and Honorary Life Member of the St. Ignatius of Loyola Council 5808. Jack was predeceased by his parents, William and Margaret Ryan; his spouses, Ada Louvain Ryan, mother to his three children in 1954, and Patricia Evelyn Ryan, mother to Kevin and Desmond Anderson in 1979. While preparing this memorial, we have learned that Jacks brother William had passed away in High River, AB only hours after Jack. 1989 saw the passing of Jacks beloved companion, Wynne Black, who brought wonderful meaning to his retirement. Jack Ryan is survived by his daughter Leslie Anne Starosilec; her husband Ronald and their daughters, Jamie Leah, Jennifer Anne, Rheanna Stacy and Robin Ashley all of Winnipeg; his daughter Janice Ruth Ryan of Grandview, MB and his son and daughter-in-law, William and Ann Ryan of Winnipeg. "Together, we have a new loneliness in our lives". Funeral mass will be celebrated by Fr. Brian Masse at the St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church, Stafford St. at Corydon Ave. on Friday, April 11 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place in the family plot at Assumption Cemetery following the mass. In lieu of flowers, the family request that one considers a donation in Jacks memory to Rossbrook House, 658 Ross Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3A 0M1 or to a charity of ones choice. The family wishes to extend their thanks for the patience and care afforded our father, particularly by the nursing staff at the Grace Hospital. LECLAIRE BROTHERS in care of arrangements. 775-2220
