PHILIP GERSHUNY Phil Gershuny, 83, died at the Health Sciences Centre on Saturday, April 5, 2003. He was born in Belilovka, Ukraine on January 1, 1920. His parents, Eli and Mani of Winnipeg and brother Mitch of Toronto, ON predeceased him. Phil moved to Winnipeg with his family in 1926 and grew up in the North End. During the Second World War he served with the Canadian Army overseas. He was a secular humanist; he believed in peace, equality and justice for all and fought for his ideals in every phase of his life. He was a longtime member of the Communist Party of Canada, as well as a member of Veterans Against Nuclear Arms. Phil was an avid reader and was very knowledgeable about Winnipeg and its history. He was an enthusiastic sports fan and was often seen watching one game while listening to another. He is survived by his three sons, Harold and partner Rick Hunter of Vancouver, Alan and wife Dale, grandchildren, Jeff and wife Darlene, Julie and Jerry Monaghan and great-granddaughter Elizabeth, Megan and great-grandson Aiden and Nikki, all of Winnipeg, and Ian and wife Linda, grandchildren, Josh, Kyle, Ryan and Erin of Newburyport, MA. Phil will be missed by his family and friends. The family would like to thank all of the staff on A4 at Health Sciences Centre. A private family memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Veterans Against Nuclear Arms (V.A.N.A.) care of Ted Powis, 603 - 1745 Esquimault Ave., West Vancouver, BC V7V 1R5, or a charity of your choice.
