Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLORNA ALICE HANKS (nee HALL) Our beloved mother, Lorna Alice Hanks, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 10, 2003, at the Riverview Health Centre. The daughter of Bert and Lily Hall, Lorna was born in Winnipeg, MB on November 22, 1934. She attended Principal Sparling Elementary School and Daniel McIntyre Collegiate. After a brief time on the west coast, Lorna commenced employment in Winnipeg at Canada Permanent Trust and it was here where she first met her dear friend Grace Robillard (Anderson). Lorna and Grace shared a special bond of friendship that spanned over 50 years. Lorna married Warren Hanks on June 4, 1955 and in their 47 years together they raised four children, Barbara, Catherine, Gordon and Wayne in the community of St. James. Mom spent most of her years as a homemaker and caregiver for her family. Compassion and caring for others was always paramount. Moms understanding and patient nature tutored her children throughout many a difficult test and lifes challenges and her nurturing spirit will be sorely missed by all of her family and friends. A loving and devoted mother and grandmother she cherished every moment shared with each of her children and grandchildren and spent many hours making sure each of them recognized the special gifts and attributes they have brought to this world. In the late 1930s, Lornas parents built a shack at Brereton Lake and this summer home became the family cottage and setting where Moms brilliant blue eyes sparkled and twinkled with happiness. Good food and laughter, mixed with a sprinkling of advice, were never far away from the cottage kitchen and backyard. In 1984, Mom returned to the workforce with Dad and helped start up a new business, Admiral Printing Limited. During this time, Mom discovered a passion for technology and was the source of much admiration as one of the first of her generation to become an "MSN" granny. The family wishes to thank our many friends who freely gave of their time and offered their support and assistance during the last six months, especially Estelle and Moms brother, Ron. In the early stages of her illness, Mom received considerate care and attention from the nurses and Dr. Pat Harris of the Grace General Hospital and Dr. Naseer Ahmed of CancerCare Manitoba. Dr. Fiona Crow, Dr. Nolan Finlayson, Teresa Campbell and the nursing and support team on Unit 3E of the Riverview Health Centre and Dr. Paul Daeninck, visiting physician, will always be remembered for their tender loving care and precious gifts of unhurried time. The family would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Moms Palliative HomeCare nurse, Chris Carlyle, and to Mark Shepherd for loving compassion, concern, assistance and coordination in helping Mom remain at home throughout most of her illness. Lorna leaves to mourn her passing her beloved husband, Warren; daughter Barbara (David King) daughter Catherine (Greg Skinner) sons, Gordon, and Wayne (Karen Hanks). Special grandsons Eric King, Shaughn and Bradley Skinner, Matthew and Stuart Hanks, and her favourite granddaughter, Diana King, will cherish memories of Grandma. She also leaves her devoted brother Ron (Ann Hall) and sister-in-law, Alice Johnston, and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service for Lorna will be held on Thursday, April 17 at 12:30 p.m. in the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, with Teresa Campbell officiating. A reception will follow the service. Pallbearers will be Craig Robillard, Blair Robillard, Wade Robillard, Glenn Hall, Robert Hall, and Ralph Hanson. Honorary pallbearers will be Grace and Ron Robillard, Estelle and William Eaton, Pat Fraser, and Lily Matheson. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be sent to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0E9 or a charity of your choice.
