CLARE KENNEDY STILL Helen Clare Kennedy Still died in Kingston, ON, on the afternoon of April 7, 2003, after a long battle with Alzheimers disease. Clare was a self-appointed promoter of each city or village in which she lived. She was active in a number of groups and organizations and did thoughtful things for many individuals. Because of Clares organizational talent and knowledge of the hospitality business, she was asked to create the Cafe at the Kingston General Hospital and Captain Henrys Tea Room at the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston. Of all Clares accomplishments, the best known and remembered is the creation of the outdoor cafe SUMMER PANTRY IN THE COURTYARD, which she operated during the summers from 1977 to 1987. The Downtown Business Association honoured her with the presentation of a certificate as a Pioneer of the Outdoor Cafes in Kingston. Summer Pantry was regularly listed in Where to Eat in Canada. Clares artistic talent, displayed in the ambience of Summer Pantry, also defined her home. She received the Trillium Award for her front yard garden. The Stills home was part of a fundraising house tour for the Kingston Symphony. Clare made a difference, inspiring many individuals and working with a number of groups and organizations within the community. Clare was born on August 1, 1929, in Winnipeg, MB, the first child of William Alexander and Helen Clare (nee Hitchings) Kennedy. Clare graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Home Economics degree. She and her husband Harold (also known as Bus) lived in Kingston from 1952 to 1955 and returned to Kingston in 1965. They lived for two years in Blacksburg, VA, where Harold completed a PhD in Statistics. They lived for eight years in Alfred, NY. Her husbands work also allowed them to spend a year in LaJolla, CA, and a year in Wolfville, NS. Clare will be greatly missed by Harold, her husband and lifelong friend; sons, Peter and Jonathan; Peters wife Sharda (Yaj) grandsons, Andrew, Michael and Jason; sister Jan Sheridan; brother John Kennedy; sister-in-law Jean; many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. A service to celebrate Clares remarkable life will be held at Chalmers United Church, 212 Barrie St., Kingston, at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, with a reception to follow.
