MARGARET ROBINSON WOOD (nee LAIRD) Margaret Robinson Wood, widow of Joseph Edwin Wood, died Friday, April 11, 2003 after a short illness. Margaret will be lovingly remembered by her sons, James "Jim" (Janice) and Brian (Sharon) six grandchildren, Bill (Debbie) Glen (Sherry), great-grandsons Jason and Jamie; David (Anne), great-grandsons, Shane and Joshua; Katharine (Michael), great-grandsons, Matthew, Gregory and Justin; Kristjana, and Catherine. Margaret was an aunt many times over and had a special relationship with her brother Bills daughters, Marion, Heather, Karen and Joedi. She was predeceased by her husband; son George; daughters-in-law, Jane and Vivian, and sisters, Phyllis and Jesse. Margaret was born on June 7, 1914 to Martha and George Laird in Winnipeg. During the First World War, Margarets father joined the Canadian Armed Forces. Margaret and her sister Jesse accompanied their mother to her family home in Scotland in 1916 while her father served overseas. Margarets family returned to Winnipeg in 1918, where her parents bought a house in 1919 on Castle Avenue in Elmwood. A sister, Phyllis, was born in 1926, followed by a brother, William (Teena) in 1927. Phyllis died in childhood. Margaret attended George V School, leaving early to help at home and later worked at Woolworths until her marriage in 1935 to her beloved "Joe". Margaret greatly enjoyed curling when her children were young. She was a homemaker until her eldest two sons left home, after which she worked part time at The Bay. Joes sudden death in 1965 resulted in her working full time, first at Central Park Lodge and then at The Charterhouse Hotel until her retirement at age 65. Margaret and Joe loved to travel and she continued after his death to enjoy adventures abroad, particularly in warm climates. She was well-travelled and enjoyed meeting people and seeing far away places. Although her health began to fail, she continued to travel as long as she was able. Early in her widowhood, Margaret moved to the Rowandale Apartments where she lived for over 30 years and made many friends. She moved, in 1999, to Vista Park Lodge where she passed away. The family wishes to thank staff at Vista Park Lodge for their care of our mother and grandmother, especially in her final illness. A memorial service celebrating Margarets life will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 23 at Fort Garry United Church, 800 Point Rd., Winnipeg. Arlene Krahn, Margarets niece, will deliver the eulogy. Interment will follow in a private family ceremony at a future date. BARDAL FUNERAL HOME 843 Sherbrook Street, 774-7474 Condolences: www.bardalfuneralhome.com
