Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALFRED DAVID KARAU March 12, 1911 - April 12, 2003 With sadness we announce the death of our dear husband, father, Opa and Uropa, aged 92 years. Alfred was born in West Prussia and grew up in East Prussia, Germany. He trained as a tailor but ultimately took over the familys farm in Gross Sturlack, Kreis Lotzen, following his marriage in 1936 to Erna Muhlack. After surviving the Russian front in the Second World War, Alfred spent nearly five years as a Prisoner of War in Russia before his release to West Germany where he was reunited with his wife and daughter who had escaped as refugees. They settled near Cologne where Alfred completed his master tailor certification in 1953. The wish for a new start led the family to immigrate to Canada in 1954 where they settled in Winnipeg and Alfred worked at Dustbane making cleaning compounds until his retirement in 1976. Alfred was a devoted Christian and member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church where he often led Bible discussions. He enjoyed reading, gardening and camping and loved long walks and cross-country skiing. He sewed dresses and suits for his family and himself and was a favourite playmate for his grandsons. He was always patient and friendly, faithful and hardworking, and he will be lovingly remembered. Alfred was predeceased by his parents, Gustav and Emma Karau; by his brothers, Johannes and Kurt; by his sisters, Hildegard, Lydia, Esther, and Gerda; and by his infant daughter Adelheid. He is survived by his wife Erna, by his daughter Irmgard (Horst) Sokolies of Winnipeg, by his grandson Armin (Laurel) Sokolies and great-grandchildren Karin and Reiner of Racine, WI, and by grandson Rex (Sheryl) Sokolies of Winnipeg. He is also survived by his sisters, Ruth Rosteck of Willowick, OH, and Emmy Melchien of Duisburg, Germany, and many nieces and nephews. We thank the staff of the Victoria General Hospital and Dr. A. Pacin for their care during his hospital stay. Viewing will take place at 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Ave. (entrance on Aubrey Street). The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 17, at Neil Bardal Inc., with interment following at Brookside Cemetery. NEIL BARDAL INC. 949-2200
