Date of Passing: Apr 13, 2003
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryAAGOT (CHRIS) GENEVIEVE PRICE Beautifully, on April 13, 2003, Palm Sunday, the beginning of the holy week of Easter, Mom passed away at her daughter Mary Louises home, with her loved ones by her side. Chris was predeceased by her beloved husband of 63 years, Ernie, on July 31, 2002; by her father, Olaf Christensen and mother, Juditha (Northfield, MN) sisters, Elvira Baldwin (Beloit, WI), Caspara Christensen (Minneapolis, MN) four brothers, Llewellyn Christensen (Minneapolis), Mentor Christensen (Colorado Springs, CO), Frijof Christensen (Northfield) and Clifford Christensen (Northfield). She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her sons, Bill, Gerry (Barb) daughter Mary Louise Schneider (Bill) grandsons, Matthew and Travis; granddaughters, Ainsley (Eric) and Shandis; great-grandson Marc; brothers, Vincent and Gerald as well as many nieces and nephews. A very special thank you to her very special niece, Lura McLuckie and very special friend, Marion Jackson for their unrelenting love and devotion to Mom. Mom was born in 1912 in Lacrosse, WI, the fifth child of nine to Reverend Olaf and Juditha Christensen. Mom spent her childhood years in Lacrosse, and Wilmar, MN, where her father preached in Norwegian to Lutheran congregations. As a young girl, Mom began to play the organ for church services. She became a beautiful self-taught pianist. In 1936, Mom graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Swedish Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis. Mom was among a rare breed of young women to stand at the capping ceremony and recite the obligatory Florence Nightingale pledge. Mom was a true nurse; she lived up to that pledge. Following graduation she ventured out by bus to Long Island, New York to begin her career at the Bayshore Hospital. Had Mom not met the love of her life at this time, she would likely have followed the path of missionary work in Madagascar as many of her family had done before her. However, her heart was stolen by a dashing young man from Winnipeg, Canada who was in the United States completing his Engineering degree and wooing her through his dance band music at night. They were married by her father on December 17, 1938 in Northfield, MN. Immediately the happy couple set off to Winnipeg to settle. However clouds loomed on the horizon when just six months later, Ernie enlisted with the Royal Canadian Engineers to serve his country in the Second World War. Mom bravely dealt with this war-time separation by knitting for him, daily correspondence, listening to radio reports for updates and aching for five years until his return. 1947 heralded the long awaited birth of the first of three children and she launched her career as a mother. She majored in motherhood and was a concerned, protective, nurturing mother until the day she died. When her three children left the nest, Mom was blessed with many years of retirement with Dad. In Naples, FL, Mom was able to be around her siblings for golf, cards and shared meals. The summers were spent at Laclu where Mom was the most avid (and certainly the most successful) fisherwoman on the lake with trophies to match the tales. Mom enjoyed picking berries, canning and preserving produce from Dads garden. Moms famous eggshell coffee and lemon meringue pie beckoned one through the porch door. Mom kept everyone she knew (and even those she didnt know) in hand-knit sweaters, scarves, mittens, hats and slippers. Her knitting and crocheted afghans were works of art. Mom was a devout Christian. Her bible brought her immeasurable joy and peace. She continued her daily devotions until her passing. How appropriate for Mom to go to the House of the Lord on Palm Sunday, the beginning of the week of praise for Easter. Mom is at peace now and is joyous to be reunited with Ernie to dwell with the Lord forever. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 16, at 11:00 a.m. in John Black Memorial United Church, 898 Henderson Hwy. at Roberta. Interment will be in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Ave. Pallbearers will be sons, Bill Price and Gerry Price; son-in-law Bill Schneider; grandsons, Travis Price and Matthew Price-Johnson; nephews George Currie, Harry Price, Jack Price, Doug McLuckie and Jim LeCain. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church or religious affiliation of your choice or to the Gideon Bible Society, 35 Kirkwall Cres., Winnipeg, MB R2K 2W8.
