GERTRUDE KESLER September 16, 1908 - April 14, 2003 Peacefully, in Winnipeg, on April 14, 2003, Gertrude Kesler, nee de Graaf, passed away. Gertrude was the last surviving sibling of Dirk and Fredrika de Graaf, one of the first Dutch settlers to arrive in Winnipeg in the late 1800s. Gertrude was predeceased by her loving husband Charles; brothers, Nun, Peter, John, Rennie and George; sisters, Elizabeth Vandergraaf and Teenie Vandergraaf. She is survived by her son Charles and daughter-in-law Wendy; daughter Caroline Malter and son-in-law Hank; grandchildren, Scott, Jona, Darin, Laura and Brian; and great-grandchildren, Michael and Kianna; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Gertrude was always very proud of her familys pioneer role in the settling of Winnipeg. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She valued education and from an early age, was a strong advocate for womens rights. Throughout her life, she remained an independent thinker. One of her happiest periods, was the time spent at the University of Winnipeg, following her retirement from the Unemployment Insurance Department. Mom was an artist and a woman of many talents. Her award winning afghans are a testament to her, as they reside with all who held a special place in her heart. She loved to read and enjoyed traveling. She was proud to be a Western Canadian and was politically active for years. We will miss you. Our thanks to the staff of Middlechurch Home B2 ward. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Humane Society on Kent Road. In keeping with Gertrudes wishes, there will be no formal service.
