ALLAN SILVER 1908 - 2003 After a brief bout with cancer, Mr. Allan Silver, born March 2, 1908 in Swansea, Wales, who resided at Shalom Gardens, Wilton Street, died April 19, 2003 at the Victoria General Hospital. Allan was predeceased by his wife Celia, daughter Annette and son Jack. He is survived by his daughter-in-law Cindy; stepgranddaughters, Amanda, Christine and Lena; and his longtime friend Helen Wright. Allan was the youngest of seven children in an orthodox Jewish family. He served in the British Royal Air Force during the Second World War with most of his time spent in India. He came to Canada with his family in 1952 and first resided in Vancouver, finally settling in Winnipeg in 1958. When he came to Canada it was to work for the Hoover Company. Later he moved to the Hudson Bay Company, Appliance Department, from which he retired in 1975. In his retirement he contributed greatly to the life of the Temple Shalom Synagogue; in fact the life of the synagogue became his life. His recent 95th birthday was celebrated by his fellow congregants and his valued contributions and faithful service were at that time acknowledged. A modest man, Allan was well known for his great sense of humour which never left him, even in his last few hours. The funeral will be held at the Temple Shalom Synagogue located at 1077 Grant Ave., Winnipeg on Monday, April 21 at 2:00 p.m. with interment at the Hebrew Sick Benefit Cemetery on McPhillips. In memory of Allan, friends may wish to donate to Temple Shalom, Manitoba, R3M 1Y6.
