Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryOLGA SCHMIDT Olga Schmidt passed away peacefully on April 20, 2003 at Fred Douglas Lodge. She was born October 8, 1913 at Greenridge, where she lived for much of her life. In 1942 she married Julius Schmidt and together they raised eight children, farming at Greenridge until 1958 when the family moved to Dominion City. Mom was a resourceful homemaker and living "in town" did not prevent her raising food, both vegetables and livestock, to feed a large family. An abundant crop was never wasted, she simply found or created a new recipe to utilize it. In later years, she and Dad continued to garden, for the sheer joy of making things grow and sharing with the family. Moms green thumb was legendary and she happily shared her skills and transferred her passion for gardening to all of her children. Her gifts of food were an expression of her love - whether she grew it, baked it, pickled or preserved it, we were all to share it. Family was of prime importance, and if mothering was her vocation, grandparenting was her reward. She delighted in her grandchildren and encouraged them in exploits and pursuits she would have barely tolerated in her children. Visits to Grandmas house yielded an endless supply of treats. Her great-grandchildren were her pride and joy and during the last year of her life she especially enjoyed the regular visits with her newest great-granddaughter. Predeceased by her husband Julius in 1998 and one son in infancy, she is survived by eight children, Elsie Berg, Florence (Bob) Stanke, Clarence (Jan), Eileen (Clayton) Gunn, Ray (Valerie), Doreen (John) Wilson, Albert (Annie-Marie) and Leo (Janice) son-in-law Bill Berg; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Ewald and Emil Bohn; and sister-in-law Verna Bohn; as well as many nieces and nephews. Her sisters, Millie Elleck and Hilda Walters; and one brother Reinhold Bohn predeceased her. The family would like to thank the volunteers and staff at Fred Douglas Lodge for their patience and care over the last six and one half years and particularly acknowledge Joyce McLean for her kindness and dedication. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 24 at 2:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Friedenstahl. Interment at Greenridge Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 200-6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6. NEIL BARDAL INC. 949-2200
